Pets play an important role in our lives – but as much as many of us cherish our fur babies, not all animals experience the same level of love and acceptance.

National Puppy Day was established on March 23, 2007, and is a grassroots effort to raise awareness about the issues surrounding shelters and the animals who live in them. Over-population, indiscriminate breeding, and overcrowding result in far too many animals being euthanized due to lack of space.  Thousands of volunteers and professionals across the country are committed to finding homes for rescue dogs and puppies, but the odds are stacked against them. Flowers for Puppies: Currans Cares was designed as a way for us to give back to our community.  With each order, a customer can choose to have Currans Flowers make a donation to one of our participating organizations, including the Northeast Animal Shelter.  One of New England’s largest non-profit, no-kill animal shelters, they have placed over 125,000 cats and dogs into forever homes since opening their doors. .There is a serious overpopulation and overbreeding problem in the United States. Sadly, one out of every 10 dogs born will ever live in a permanent, loving home. Because of the number of animals that are abandoned or strays, approximately 4 million dogs will make their way into shelters annually, and 1.7 million of them will, unfortunately, be euthanized.

Adopt From Shelters:  Although you may assume that commercial, for-profit breeders do not contribute to the crowding problem in the shelters, 25% of the dogs in the facilities are actually purebred. Organizers of National Puppy Day are determined to convince prospective pet owners that they should head for the shelters to adopt, therefore literally be saving a life.
